How to Pick the Perfect Air Filter for Your HVAC Unit

When it comes to keeping your HVAC system running smoothly, the right size air filter is essential. Too small or too large of a filter can cause problems with airflow, reduce energy efficiency, and increase the risk of system damage. Here are some tips on how to pick the perfect air filter for your HVAC unit.

Measure Your Filter Slot

The first step in finding an appropriate air filter is to measure the slot where it will be installed. Carefully measure both the length and width of the slot in inches and write down these measurements. It's important that you get this measurement right as even a slight difference in size can mean that your new filter won't fit properly.

Check MERV Rating

The next step is to check out what Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating your existing air filter has. This rating tells you how effective an air filter is at removing particles from the air - higher ratings indicate more efficient filters. Not all filters have a MERV rating so if yours doesn't, then you may need to contact its manufacturer for more information.

Compare Sizes & Ratings

Once you have both measurements and MERV rating, compare them with available filters on offer. Most filters come in standard sizes so you should be able to find one that matches up with your measurements. Additionally, make sure that any new filter has a comparable MERV rating as having one which is too low won't provide enough filtration while one which is too high could cause airflow issues.
